Your Burrito Is a Personality Test: The Five Restaurant Order Archetypes, Ranked
Astrology had a good run, but it has one fatal flaw: it's based on your birthday, which tells you absolutely nothing about how you behave when the server walks up and says "what can I get started for you?"
Your restaurant order, on the other hand? That's raw data. That's a window into your soul. After collecting order habits from hundreds of readers, we've identified five distinct Order Personalities — and we'd bet good money yours is on this list.
1. The Loyalist
The Loyalist found their order years ago — possibly a decade ago — and sees no reason to reopen negotiations. Same burrito. Same substitutions. Same "no onions, extra lime" that the staff at their usual spot could recite in their sleep.
Strengths: zero decision fatigue, never disappointed, may have a menu item named after them at a local place. Weaknesses: has possibly never experienced culinary joy since the Obama administration. Loyalists don't see this as a problem.
Tell-tale sign: they say "the usual" anywhere they've been more than twice.
2. The Customizer
Nothing on any menu will ever be exactly right for the Customizer, because the menu is merely a starting point. They order the burger but swap the bun, remove the tomato, add avocado, sub the fries, and ask — always ask — if the kitchen can do a half-and-half sauce situation.
Strengths: their final product is genuinely optimized. Weaknesses: everyone behind them in line has aged visibly. Customizers believe they're easygoing, which is the funniest part about them.
3. The Risk-Taker
The Risk-Taker refuses to order the same thing twice, on principle. They see the menu as a challenge and the daily special as destiny. Roughly one in three meals is a triumph. The other two are "well, that was a choice."
Strengths: has eaten at and discovered every good spot in a 30-mile radius. Weaknesses: has also ordered sea urchin at a sports bar and lived to regret it. They will tell you the story anyway.
4. The Order-Anxiety Spiraler
This person decided what they wanted ten minutes before the server arrived, then immediately forgot it the second eye contact was made. They will panic-order something they didn't want, stare at it when it arrives, and say "oh. Right."
Strengths: deeply relatable. Weaknesses: everything else, temporarily. The Spiraler's greatest fear is a menu with 40 items and a server who says "take your time."
5. The Copycat
The Copycat has no order. The Copycat has your order. They will wait for everyone else at the table to commit, then say "ooh, actually, I'll have the same thing." This is not laziness — it's a sophisticated risk-avoidance strategy honed over years of watching other people's food arrive better than theirs.
Strengths: never has menu regret. Weaknesses: has never once been the person whose food everyone else says "ooh what's THAT?" about.
So What Does Your Order Say About You?
Here's the astrology-style breakdown, no birth chart required:
- Loyalists are comfort-seekers who value consistency and probably have a favorite chair. Extremely trustworthy. Terrifying on vacation.
- Customizers are natural problem-solvers with strong opinions about things they've never tried.
- Risk-Takers are optimists with a high tolerance for mediocre appetizers. Great travel companions, chaotic group-chat planners.
- Spiralers are thoughtful people whose brains simply short-circuit under mild social pressure. You're doing great.
- Copycats are diplomatic, easygoing, and secretly the glue of every friend group. Also, pick your own dinner. We're begging.
The beautiful thing is that none of these are wrong — except maybe ordering sea urchin at a sports bar, which is wrong.
